Introduction
Huntress recently released its 2025 Cyber Threat Report—a comprehensive look back at 2024, highlighting the tactics, behaviors, and trends they observed while safeguarding millions of devices and users worldwide. Below, I’ve summarised some of the key insights from the report. You can also view or download the full version. Let’s begin with a line from the executive summary “The gap between sophistication in attacks on large enterprises and smaller businesses has narrowed—in fact, it’s all but disappeared.”
This reinforces what we’ve consistently observed at CyberContego over the past year: small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are facing the same level of sophisticated cyberattacks as large corporations. The key difference? Larger companies recognise these threats and invest heavily in defense. Meanwhile, many SMEs remain in denial, clinging to the outdated belief that “we’re too small to be targeted.”
The reality is stark—size no longer matters to cybercriminals. Every business is a potential target, and poorly protected SMEs are easy pickings. In the eyes of hackers, an under-defended SME is an opportunity waiting to be exploited.
For many years, robust cyber defence tools have been beyond the financial reach of SMEs. Since 2016 Huntress’ mission has been to provide enterprise-grade cybersecurity solutions at a price point that small and medium-sized businesses can realistically afford.
CyberContego’s Managed Security Operations Centre (or SOC) is powered by Huntress and delivers comprehensive, 360-degree cybersecurity protection through three tightly integrated services: Endpoint Detection & Response, Identity Detection & Response and Security Information & Event Management. These components work seamlessly together to safeguard your business around the clock — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Managed SOC service is affordable for all SMEs. To illustrate this I will use examples of two SME clients we provide this service for.
The first client is an 7-person legal firm in Co. Roscommon. The firm has two partners, one trainee solicitor and four support staff. Along with our Managed SOC the firm also uses our DMARC compliance service to protect their email domain from impersonation. Total cost, €275 plus VAT per month, or less than one hour’s billing from one of the partners.
The second client is a 45-person manufacturing firm in Co. Galway. Their production line runs 16-hours per day, 5 days per week and downtime on the line during the production schedule costs them €4,000 per hour in lost revenue. Along with the Managed SOC they also use our Continuous Vulnerability Assessment service. Total cost, €1,120 plus VAT per month. Prior to engaging with CyberContego this client suffered a cyber attack which crippled their production line for 3 days resulting in €192,000 of lost revenue and an IT cleanup bill of nearly €20,000.
